Rescuing

Overview
This page is primarily designed for UK residents, though many of the insights shared may also be relevant to a global audience. Here, I will share my personal experiences with reusing and explore the ethical considerations surrounding it.
Plan A-Z
In my home, I have an entire room dedicated to exotic animals—a passion I take very seriously. I strive to provide the best possible care for them and to keep them for as long as I can. However, life is unpredictable, and circumstances can change for better or worse. It’s essential to have a plan in place to ensure your animals are cared for, even if your situation changes unexpectedly. When I first started keeping exotic creatures on a larger scale, I had a wide variety of mantises from different species. I used vivariums with proper lighting and water bowls to maintain humidity levels, along with separate terrariums for each individual mantis. I developed a consistent routine to ensure all my animals were well cared for. But then I realized—if something happened to me, who in my household would know how to take care of them?
Over time, I’ve reflected on this challenge and worked to improve my contingency plans. My wife has observed and learned from me, so she can step in and manage their care during any unexpected transitions. When I go on holiday, I ensure friends or family members are briefed on the short-term requirements needed to keep my animals happy and healthy. This website is the next evolution of my efforts—documenting my experience and care routines so that others can benefit from my journey in keeping exotic animals.
I’ve also discovered that maintaining good relationships with pet shops is invaluable. These businesses are the backbone of the exotic animal community. By supporting them, you’ll often find that they’re more than willing to reciprocate with their services. Many shops are happy to take in animals, rehome them, or sell them to appropriate buyers if needed. Personally, I’ve rehomed some of my invertebrates through pet shops during life changes over the past few years, and it’s been a reliable option.
Rescuing
There are many ways to get involved in rescuing animals across the UK. Personally, I’ve adopted a couple of tarantulas from friends who could no longer care for them due to space constraints caused by moving. Additionally, there is an RSPCA centre in Brighton that specifically focuses on rescuing exotic animals. If you’re considering getting a new pet, I always recommend exploring rescue options first before purchasing from a breeder or pet shop. The RSPCA often provides detailed information on an animal’s care requirements and, in most cases, its medical history, helping you make an informed decision.
Another great way to find rescue opportunities is through online forums or platforms such as Facebook. While Facebook policies prohibit the sale of animals, rehoming or rescuing pets is generally allowed. Join animal groups that align with your interests, and you’ll likely come across posts from people seeking homes for their animals.
There are also various exotic animal rescue centres located throughout the UK. Reach out to them to inquire about their rescue initiatives and the animals available for adoption. You might be pleasantly surprised by the unique and rewarding opportunities you’ll discover.
